November 2007 update

Since the last update the family has navigated the northern hemisphere summer and its vacations and the high holidays. Here is what we got up to. And if you have any comments, contributions or just plain love-letters, please click here.

HELP! I need an editor!
I am sitting on three (count ’em three) Gazettes, which I need edited . Can anyone out there help? If so please email me by clicking here.
David Shaltiel
Please click the cartoon on the left for a link to material about General David Shaltiel lovingly assembled by our cousins in the Netherlands. If you are a subscriber, you can click here for an account of Gen. Shaltiel and the Battle of Jerusalem given by Dr Eli Tzur at our Jerusalem Reunion.
Jewish Genealogy resource
Ed Motola of Salt Lake City (click to email) draws our attention to the Gedcom file of the Knowles Collection of British Jewish genealogy spearheaded by the late Isobel Mordy. It is a 4MB file readily imported into any genealogy program. The record contains 10,830 individuals, 4,184 families, 13,192 individual notes, and 36,553 source blocks. The only Saltiel in the list is Joseph (aka Yom Tov) Saltiel, whose marriage to Victoria Franks is noted. Members of the family can search for connections elsewhere.

5 Netherlands links
From Amsterdam, Vibeke Sealtiel Olsen has snagged several links to our family and its roots. Please click the picture on the left, for the home page of the Dutch Jewish Heritage site (in English). If you want to make a search, please click here: thus, to see the list of Sealtiels enter the name in the box on the top left and click on “search”.

As an example, here is the link to Sophia Morpurgo, who is one of our relatives (see the obituary)

Our own website has many more such links. If you are a subscriber, you can click here to see the full list.

News from New Zealand
Lynette Grave from Dunedin, New Zealand, sends news from down under. Please click the picture on the right for her lively update on her involvement in Zonta, a women’s network

Facebook piccies from Alice Saltiel
Some folks have really got the facebook bug. From Canmore, Alberta, Alice Saltiel Marshall writes that she has uploaded the snaps of her trip to the Canadian backcountry this summer.
Please click the picture on the right (not one of Alice’s) to see them. For something really special, click here to see Alice and hubby Bill singing a Canadian version of “This land is your land”.

5 Denise Saltiel-Marshall’s wedding
More from Alice and Bill (click to congratulate the proud parents), whose daughter, Denise, has just tied the knot with Larry. For the pre-wedding photos please click here; for the ceremony, please click the picture on the left.

The rocking Turk, Sabi Saltiel
Sabi continues his musical career in Massachusetts. Please click the picture on the left for his website. I haven’t met him, but I got a bit closer when I spent an evening this summer with his class-mate from the Berklee College of Music, my cousin Rebeca (Mekkie) Takamizu, though as best I know they too have yet to meet

Laurence Saltiel
More music: between 30 October and 3 November, Laurence Saltiel (click to reach her site) was singing in Transatlantico, a five day celebration of Brazilian Music in Lyon. Please click the picture on the right for details (in French) of the band concerned, the Gondwana Ensemble.

Spanish Jewish cemetery
Leon Saltiel of Salonika (click to email) spotted an account in (of all things) a newspaper from Iowa, of the excavation of a Jewish cemetery in Catalonia. Please click the picture on the right for the full article.

 Hava Nagila
It is the one hundredth anniversary of the composition of lyrics for the song which some Shealtiels have taken as our anthem, the joyful Hava Nagila. Please click the picture on the left for what Moshe Shaltiel (click to say hi) describes as a “preppy” version of this—the Dutch violinist Andre Rieu with a full orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall, anthologised on (where else?) youtube.
Grand-kids specials
Noa Saragossa (on the left) was born on 11 October (click the picture to congratulate proud mum and dad, Simone and Shlomy); on the right her brother Nadav celebrates his third birthday with traditional gusto.

Turning serious for Wubie
Running onto more than any of us bargained for, our Jewish Mormon, David Motola (Wubie to his pals; click to email), continues his missionary year in Canada. Although there has been comedy, (a basketball match and several unwanted prom invitations), darkness has intruded:
a dead body and some sad, bad stories.

With best wishes
Miles Saltiel
